Introducing.... Michael Conway Baker

After winning 3 Canadian Academy Awards (GENIES) for film music, an ACTRA (GEMINI) for music for a tv series, numerous nominations and a JUNO for best classical composition (Piano Concerto) I feel I can attest to the invaluable contribution good music makes to film in any genre - feature, short, documentary, tv series, etc. As well as providing MIDI scores, where I often combine sampled sounds with acoustic instruments, I have recorded film music with major orchestras throughout the world. Some of these orchestras are: Vancouver Symphony, London Symphony (England), Toronto Symphony, Sinfonia of London (England - probably the finest recording orchestra in the world), Utah Symphony and numerous professional ensembles. I believe effective film music can only be produced when the music composed is first rate! (badly composed music played well is still bad music). I insist that all aspects of music production deserve a high standard of excellence. Although I have produced many scores (200 to date as well as 133 concert works) often using MIDI gear in my studio, I am best known for my orchestral scores. (I orchestrate ALL my music myself!) My goal is to provide the very best I can for the project no matter the budget.

Studio Facilities are geared to the COMFORT of my clients. My studio is bright and airy with a beautiful view of the surrounding forest. Clients sit on comfortable leather couches watching their film on a 32” monitor. I sit at a full keyboard array patched to thousands of sampled sounds coordinated by my engineer who sits in the opposite corner of the room. Everyone has a monitor to view the view simultaneously. All sounds are locked through timecode with picture. I will play music up against the picture for the filmmaker’s consideration. The aim of this procedure is to involve the filmmaker in the creative process. My greatest delight is seeing the excitement generated when music is added to film.
